This riverfront loft, located in a repurposed 19th century cotton mill in Columbus, GA, should have featured a gorgeous view of the water, but the space plan of the kitchen interfered. Cathy Winslow of Splash Kitchens and Baths was tasked with reworking the kitchen in order to make the view the star of a bright and comfortable space.

From the beginning, the project was a challenging one. The loft is located on the third floor of the historic building, served by only one elevator, requiring all materials to be carted up and down on a hand truck. Additionally, the electrical and plumbing were located in the very pantry wall that was blocking the view. By reducing the size of the wall and utilizing cable shelves, Winslow’s team was able to create a modern and visually interesting architectural feature without removing the mechanical pipes. A multi-functional 16′ island provides plenty of prep space and casual eating/chatting space from which the homeowner and guests can admire the river view. A marble-look Daltile backsplash and blue pendant lights provide visual interest against the white cabinetry and countertops.
